Home Blood Pressure Monitoring: Questions to Ask Before You Start

Older adults supporting heart health through walking

Home blood pressure readings can give a care team useful context, but technique matters. Before buying or using a monitor, ask which device and cuff size are appropriate, when to measure, how many readings to take, and what numbers should prompt a call.

Create consistent conditions

Follow your clinician’s instructions about rest, position, arm support, timing, caffeine, exercise, and medicines. Record the date, time, reading, pulse, symptoms, and any unusual circumstance. Bring the record—and the monitor if requested—to an appointment so technique and accuracy can be reviewed.

One reading does not tell the whole story. Do not change blood pressure medicine based only on a home number unless your qualified professional has given you a specific plan.

Know urgent symptoms

Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or other severe new symptoms may require emergency care. Call your local emergency number.
