Movement Snacks: An Easier Way to Sit Less Throughout the Day

Active older couple walking beside a Canadian waterfront

A “movement snack” is a short burst of activity placed inside a day that might otherwise be mostly sedentary. It is not a replacement for an individualized exercise plan, but it can make movement feel more realistic: a brisk hallway walk, gentle mobility between meetings, or a few minutes of stair climbing when appropriate.

Make the cue obvious

Connect movement to something that already happens. Walk for five minutes after lunch, stand during one phone call, or do a brief mobility routine after brushing your teeth. Consistency is usually more useful than an ambitious plan that disappears after a week.

Start within your limits

People with chest pain, dizziness, severe shortness of breath, recent surgery, balance concerns, or significant joint problems should ask a qualified professional about safe activity. Stop and seek help if symptoms are sudden or severe.

Track how you feel, not only minutes. Better energy, easier stairs, and a routine you can repeat are meaningful signs of progress.
